One of the beauties of WordPress is that you can plug in a theme and everything looks amazing. What would have taken hours of PHP coding five years ago takes a few seconds and is, in general, pretty slick.

The other side of the instant gratification coin is that, of course, not everything is done. The shell is there, and pretty, but then the drudgery begins – the moving and/or deleting of certain elements, the filling in of links and pictures and, of course, words that make the site yours, and not theirs.

That’s where we are today with JayGroce.com. I’ve made some serious progress, but there is still much to be done. Since I am simultaneously developing four sites just like this one, I get some economies of scale, but the elements that don’t lend themselves to duplication must be done four times, and that, my friends, is grinding.

So, if you get here, and something looks out of place, give it a week. I’m only one guy, and I only get to do this at night and on weekends, so my project plan extends out well into the fall.

It is at moments like these when I wonder most about the state of affairs of this country and of the world in general. Of course, I’m talking about the fact that September is just a couple of weeks away, and I will be turning 40 – an age at which most people either fall over dead, or just give up and shuffle out the rest of their life in pajamas and some comfy slippers – and yet no one (not even the President) has bothered to call and wish me a happy pre-birthday month.

I think I’ll buy myself something nice to drown my despondency.

So, the site JayGroce.com (which is where you are. Welcome.) is shaping up. I’m not sure why I need a blog here, but maybe it will be nice. And, until I figure out how to not have it, I don’t want a blank page. Of course I kid. I’ll likely use this to keep my zillions of subscribers up to date on all my happenings around the interwebs.

For now, just the one post will be sufficient.
